Day 93

THIN SPACE

This week in Prayer Hour, we’re going to be checking out the Parables of Jesus – the stories Jesus told about life in his Kingdom.

The Parables of the Talents

Matthew 25:14-30

“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

“After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

“‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

The Message

Matthew’s gospel devotes two full chapters to the subject of the second coming of Christ. How does Jesus prepare his followers for the day of his return? He tells them stories.

The master of this parable is meant to represent Jesus. The servants are followers of Jesus. Similar to the parable, Jesus has also given responsibility to his followers, and similar to the parable, he, the master, has promised to one day return.

Here, the master is entrusting his servants with a measure of his wealth. Jesus has entrusted his followers with his greatest treasures, making them caretakers of his ministry and commissioned ambassadors of his mission. This is an incredible responsibility; one Christ-followers should take seriously.

As servants of Christ, we are called to be productive. All of our health, money, time, and abilities have come from Him, and we are tasked with putting them to use to benefit the kingdom.

One day the master will return, and when he does, he’ll want to know what we’ve done with this precious life we’ve been given. Were we good stewards of what belongs to him? Did we grow his investment? Or did we bury our time, talent, and opportunities?

Day 92

THIN SPACE

This week in Prayer Hour, we’re going to be checking out the Parables of Jesus – the stories Jesus told about life in his Kingdom.

The Parables of the Good Samaritan

The Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25 - 37
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

The Message

This is one of Jesus most famous parables.
Loving your neighbour isn’t just about caring for those you like.
Jesus challenges us to reach out and step out in faith to share Gods message of love and hope to break down divisions and make a difference.

Pray

Find out more and pray about the work of the Samaritans or Samaritans Purse.
Who would you find it a challenge to be a Good Samaritan too? Pray into this.
We need to pray about the divisions in our town, country, world.
How can we make a difference?

Day 91

THIN SPACE

This week in Prayer Hour, we’re going to be checking out the Parables of Jesus – the stories Jesus told about life in his Kingdom.
Today 3 stories:

The Parables of the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, the Lost Son.

The parable of the lost sheep

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering round to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, ‘This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.’ Then Jesus told them this parable: ‘Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?  And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.” I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not need to repent.

The parable of the lost coin

Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbours together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.”  In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.’

The parable of the lost son

Jesus continued: ‘There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, “Father, give me my share of the estate.” So he divided his property between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. When he came to his senses, he said, “How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!  I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.”  So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms round him and kissed him. The son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” ‘But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” So they began to celebrate. ‘Meanwhile, the elder son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. “Your brother has come,” he replied, “and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.” ‘The elder brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, “Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!” ‘“My son,” the father said, “you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” (Luke 15: 1-32)

The Message

This is the only time in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John that Jesus tells 3 consecutive stories. Why? Because he wants to hammer home his point – the Lost matter massively to God.
In the Parables of the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, the Lost Son, 3 things happen

  1. Something of great value was lost

  2. There was a manic search for the thing lost

  3. There was a massive party when the thing was found

Jesus wants you and me to join his search and rescue team
Jesus wants you and me to join his party planning team
Jesus wants you and me help him bring the lost home

The Challenge

Jesus ‘came to seek and to save the lost’ (Luke 19:10)
How are you going to join Jesus’ search and rescue team?
Who’s party in heaven do you most want to organise?
Pray that you get to do it in 2020

Day 90

THIN SPACE

This week, Prayer Hour is all about justice, focusing in on a whole bunch of Manchester-based, Jesus-loving, Social Justice movements, aiming to punch holes in the darkness of our world to allow God’s love, God’s justice, God’s Kingdom to come pouring through.

Today we are going to be talking about the work of Hope for Justice.

Hope for Justice

Hope for Justice is an international charity based in Manchester. Its mission is to bring an end to modern slavery by preventing exploitation, rescuing victims, restoring lives, and reforming society. Many people still think of ‘slavery’ as something from the history books, but there are more people trapped in slavery today than at any point in human history.

Modern Slavery Worldwide

Modern slavery is thought to be the world’s third-largest criminal enterprise. It is a hidden crime, but the best estimates suggest there are 40.3 million people in forced labour, forced marriage, sexual exploitation and domestic servitude  (Source: International Labor Organization, Sept 2017).

Modern Slavery in the UK

The most recent UK government estimate is about 10,000 to 13,000 victims in the UK (Home Office, 2013). But in summer 2017, the National Crime Agency suggested this estimate was too low, and in fact there are ‘tens of thousands’ of UK victims. Hope for Justice agrees.

In the UK, Hope for Justice provides training to frontline professionals (including police, NHS, homeless shelter staff, community groups etc.) to spot the signs of modern slavery and respond effectively. HfJ trained investigators work with police and other agencies to identify victims of modern slavery, build bridges of trust with them and remove them from exploitation. HfJ Independent Modern Slavery Advocates (IMSAs) provide long term victim-centred support including help to access housing, benefits, employment, mental health support and legal assistance. And Hope for Justice uses all its experience of frontline work to seek legislative and police reform.

Hope for Justice is currently supporting over 100 survivors (and their dependants) in the UK. During the pandemic, the team have continued to operate remotely, communicating with survivors over the phone and online. This has provided a vital lifeline for many survivors to express their concerns and needs and be able to understand (through using interpreters in their own language) all the guidance relating to Covid-19. Hope for Justice has also assisted with the provision of food parcels for those who were unable to access basic necessities and helped with resourcing technological equipment to reduce isolation and allow continued access to important services such as counselling and education (which moved online).

Message Enterprise Centre

Many of us are familiar with the Message Enterprise Centre (MEC) in Sharston, which helps people rebuild their lives through socially responsible business. Whilst planning is underway for the re-opening of the businesses (café/catering and hair and beauty), the team are participating in Love Wythenshawe by cooking and delivering meals to 150 homes to people who may otherwise not get a good meal. Capacity is being increased to 500 throughout July and August and possibly beyond. And during the week of 9-16 August the team will be working in the community with local churches, helping with gardening and practical tasks and sharing Jesus’ love. Volunteers are welcome!

To find out more, please visit - The MEC Website

The Oaks

The Oaks
is part of the MEC and is a resettlement home in Wythenshawe for up to 8 men who are vulnerable, frequently straight out of prison and not ready for employment but want to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus. After being in The Oaks for 12-18 months they are able to move into employment in the MEC and shared housing.

Indescribable

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea

Creation's revealing Your majesty

From the colors of Fall to the fragrance of Spring

Ev'ry creature unique in the song that it sings

All exclaiming

Indescribable uncontainable

You placed the stars in the sky

And You know them by name

You are amazing God

All powerful untamable

Awestruck we fall to our knees

As we humbly proclaim

You are amazing God

Who has told ev'ry lightning bolt where it should go

Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow

Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light

Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night

None can fathom

You are amazing God

Indescribable uncontainable

You placed the stars in the sky

And You know them by name

You are amazing God

Incomparable unchangeable

You see the depths of my heart

And You love me the same

You are amazing God

Move

When You move darkness runs for cover
When You move no one's turned away
'Cause where You are fear turns into praises
And where You are no heart's left unchanged

So come move let justice roll on like a river
Let worship turn into revival
Lord lead us back to You

When You move the outcast finds a family
When You move the orphan finds a home
Lord here we are oh teach us to love mercy
With humble hearts we bow down at Your throne
King of all generations
Let ev'ry tongue and nation
Surrender all to You alone

Come Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit
Fall on us
Burn like a fire
Living flame of love

We're on our knees holy God
Show us your glory oh God
We're on our knees
Crying for heaven to come to earth
Father God Your will be done
Christ in us Your Kingdom come
Spirit lead us now as one
Set Your church on fire again
We're on our knees
Crying for heaven to come to earth
